In our family the birth and marriage of Alan Caldwell and Janet Guthrie cannot be found. Shortly before their children are first registered in St Quivox Parish Ayrshire there were troubles in Northern Ireland. It is not inconceivable that they had emigrated to Ayrshire rather than North America. Their family was born over a relatively short space of time. If Janet's first child at St Quivox was born when she was 20 or less then she would have only been in her early 30's when she stopped having children that are recorded in Scotland. There may be many reasons for this: there may have been children before St Quivox, she may have married late, either she or Alan may have died whilst still fairly young, or they may have emigrated again or they may simply have just stopped having children.

According to Matheson's "Special Report on Surnames" relating to births in Ireland during 1890 there were:

11 Guthrie births (1 Leinster; 5 Munster; 4 Ulster; 1 Connacht)
7 McMurtrie births (All in Ulster)
32 Morton births (6 Leister; 1 Munster; 24 Ulster; 1 Connacht)
Daughter Janet married Andrew McMurtrie in St Quivox
Son John married Mary Morton but their place of marriage is not known

Matheson's report was prepared over 100 years after the Caldwell-Guthrie family had their children in Scotland however I do not know of any contemporary source to identify where Caldwell's and Guthries's were located in Ireland excepting the Griffiths Valuations of the mid 1800's.

Given that the date timings make this exercise quite unreliable I still thought it might be an interesting exercise to look for the areas in Antrim where the Guthries might be located. When found I checked for McMurtrie's, Morton's and Caldwell's.

I am presuming that the Tyrone families were more likely to go to North America in times of trouble whilst the Antrim families may be more split towards returning to Scotland.

From the broad location of propertied Caldwell's in Ulster as disclosed by the Griffith Valuation of Tyrone it appears that the bulk of the Caldwell families were distinctly located outside the plantation areas of the Jacobean times nearly 250 years earlier.

The Tyrone Caldwell families seem to be located principally in a broad band in the southern part of Tyrone running roughly from Termonamongan-Urney/Ardstaw in the north-west to Aghalurcher-Augher in the south-east.

In neighbouring Fermanagh they occupy the north bank of Lough Earne through Megeracross to Agthavea and Aghalurcher.

This seems to me to very much be part of the "strutting ground" of the early Caldwells that eventually became associated with Castle Caldwell. I will have to re-read Cuningham's book "The Caldwell's of Castle Caldwell" as he mentions other properties owned by that family before they finally settled at Belleek. I know that these landholdings were extensive.

Just from maps I think I can safely say that the Scots-Irish Caldwells did not come from the largely failed early Jacobean Plantations but were from a later settlement.

I will explore the possible timings but for the moment I might muse that perhaps the Caldwell families in Fermanagh and southern Tyrone were relations and other cadets of the original John Caldwell family from Prestwick. There was plenty of time for various families to have become established throughout the district before the Castle Caldwell branch surged to its distinct prominance. Many early branches of the family were "lost" and we might be looking at them 200 years later (8 generations) in Griffiths Valuations.

In 1894 RE Matheson, secretary of the General Register Office of Ireland produced a statistical report based on births registered in Ireland in 1890. It was printed as an Appendix to the Twenty-ninth Report of the Registrar-General in 1894. A note states that the estimated number of persons with each surname in the population cna be ascertained by multiplying the number of entires in the table by the average birth rate, which for 1890 was 1:44.8.

I am starting to venture into more and more places where member's of the Caldwell settled. I am not an expert on the Caldwell's of North America, but to become knowledgeable you have to start somewhere:

Tinkling Springs Virginia had Caldwell settlers. I note that my Caldwell family in Galston Ayrshire had associations with Wilson, McClanachan, Breckenridge & Paton. Names or variations of these names are mentioned as being in John Christian's quarter (along with Caldwell). "Gemmel" is also a "good Ayrshire name".
